2009 Summer Research at Notre Dame
During the summer of 2009, students and teachers from Riley High School worked alongside faculty from Notre Dame.
Two different types of research were conducted:
1) Collecting samples and analyzing baseline health of Bowman Creek
2) Predictive Modeling of Bowman Creek during the rainy season using MatLab.
Baseline Data
We set out to find the current conditions of the creek to compare the new data against.
We sampled the water at each of the four predetermined sites where the city's sensors will be placed.

We discovered high levels of E-coli at the golf course so we went back to collect more samples.
We collected seven samples over the course of one day.

Predictive Modeling
We met with Dr Brockman and Shannon Kuntz to learn how to use MatLab for data modeling.
We modeled the effects of different amounts of rain on the depth and flow rate of the creek.

NOTE TO TEACHERS: This multi-class collaborative activity makes use of google forms and google documents nested in this wiki, in addition to google maps. The three steps listed below can be modified easily for use inside a single classroom, so that a class creates its own map of quakes detected at LIGO. The single-class version can be done without any reference to google forms or documents, using only google maps and the I2U2 LIGO e-Lab . Read here for further discussion of these options.

2. Post to the e-Lab an argument for the earthquake's detection at LIGO
You may have begun either with a USGS-identified quake, or with LIGO seismic data: either way, a quake origin, wave travel time and estimated arrival time at LIGO should be determined and checked against the LIGO data. Make an argument that you've confirmed a known earthquake in the LIGO data, writing this up in an I2U2 LIGO e-Lab poster. (Here is one student's write-up of how he created an earlier version of this same project.)

Today I went into lab for around 2 hours. Nan and I talked about what we should do next on the project. She attempted the time study where she toggles the temperature between 50 and 60 degrees Celsius. She said that the results were not that great.
